Intent

At Knutton St Mary’s Academy we aim to prepare our children for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world.  This will be achieved through a broad and balanced curriculum which is rooted in our local community and reaches out to the wider world providing children with a range of experiences and celebrating diversity. We want the children to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.  Through the programmes of study children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across each year group, as well as the application of scientific skills.

This curriculum uses an enquiry approach to the exploration of primary science to nurture flourishing scientists who are curious about the world around them. The curriculum aims to developing the skills of a scientist through planned opportunities for working scientifically- asking questions, planning, evaluating, measuring and observing. Different types of enquiry: observation of time, research, pattern seeking, fair testing and grouping and classifying. Designed so that pupils learn to use a variety of approaches to answer relevant scientific questions. These types of scientific enquiry should include: observing over time; pattern seeking; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative
and fair testing (controlled investigations); and researching using secondary sources.
