Safeguarding Curriculum Information

At Knutton, St. Mary’s C of E Academy, we ensure that all our children feel secure, listened to and have the opportunities to talk whenever needed. Throughout our curriculum, we provide lessons and opportunities that equip our children with the tools to stay safe and develop essential skills for life.

Keeping our children safe is our top priority at Knutton, so we have devised a PSHE curriculum personalised to our children and with safeguarding at the heart.

Personal, Social, Health and Economics education (PSHE) is the foundation of a child’s learning. It helps give children the skills and understanding they need to be safe, morally good, healthy and independent citizens. In addition, we provide our children the opportunity to learn about their rights and understand how their actions affect others.

Children are taught about their place in the world and the contributions they can make to society locally, nationally and globally. Our PSHE curriculum encompasses experiences of diversity and reflects our changing society. Children are encouraged to develop their self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

The 6 core themes of our PSHE programme of study focuses on:

  • Safeguarding
  • Relationships and Sex Education
  • E-Safety
  • Keeping Safe
  • Health and Well-being
  • Economic Well-being

At Knutton St Mary’s, safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. We are fully committed to keeping every child safe, happy, and ready to learn.

We teach children how to stay safe through our curriculum, especially in PSHE, as well as across other subjects. Our aim is to give pupils the knowledge, confidence, and skills they need to make safe choices in school and in everyday life.

Children learn about a range of important areas, including:

  • Online safety and using technology responsibly
  • Road, rail, fire, and water safety
  • Bullying, including cyberbullying, and how to get help
  • Physical and mental wellbeing
  • Staying safe in the community and on school visits
  • Road and rail safety (including out of school visits, bike-ability, work with police officers in the community)
  • Poolside and water safety through swimming lessons
  • Fire awareness (including visits from the local fire service)
  • Visits to school from medical staff
  • Visitors from charities such as Barnados, NSPCC, the dogs trust to do focused projects
  • Work from local voluntary sector services particularly around safe transition to Secondary school
  • Plays and shows
  • Exploitation
  • Online safety quizzes and training
  • Our visits and experiences incorporate “Stranger Danger”, being safe in the outdoors, what to do if??
  • What to do if you are separated from your group (in relation to school visits)
  • Safe use of technology including password security and privacy settings

We enrich this learning through visits, visitors, and real-life experiences, including work with the police, fire service, medical professionals, and charities.

We ensure all safeguarding learning is age-appropriate. Where needed, more sensitive topics are carefully taught in small groups or on a 1:1 basis to support individual needs.

We pride ourselves on creating a safe, open, and supportive environment where children feel confident to share their views, ask questions, and seek help. Strong relationships between staff and pupils help ensure that children feel listened to and valued.

Through assemblies, class discussions, and daily school life, we promote:

  • Respect, kindness, and inclusion
  • Understanding of different people, families, and communities
  • British values and equality
  • The importance of making positive choices

At the start of each school year, we revisit our school values and expectations to ensure all children understand how to stay safe and be part of Team Knutton.
