OUR

Intent

At Knutton, St. Mary’s CE Academy, our intent is to give children an imaginative and stimulating curriculum that supports the children’s progressive development of knowledge, understanding and skills within RE that prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life in modern Britain.

We aim support all children to develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity as a living and diverse faith, other religions and worldviews, in order to appreciate the way that beliefs shape life and behaviour, to develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues and enhance their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development – allowing them to achieve their God-given potential and flourish.

OUR

Aspirations

We want pupils to develop an understanding of how subjects and specific skills are linked to future jobs. Here are some of the jobs you could aspire to do in the future as a Religious Scholar:

  • Vicar
  • Chaplain
  • Member of Parliament
  • Journalist
  • Advice Worker
  • Charity fundraiser
  • Youth worker

OUR

Impact

  • Children will be able to express what they have learnt about a religion and from a religion
  • Children will be able to compare similarities and differences between different world faiths
  • Children will have an understanding of how different faiths are intertwined with culture.
  • Children will be able to draw comparisons between the beliefs of world faiths and our British Values
  • Children will understand viewpoints of others and be able to reflect on their own thinking in the light of others’ opinions.
  • They will develop the ability to consider the thoughts and points of view of others including people beyond their own immediate contact.
  • Children will achieve age related expectations in RE at the end of their cohort year.

Right to Withdrawal

At our school we wish to be an inclusive community but recognise that parents have the legal right to withdraw their children from religious education or collective worship on the grounds of conscience, without giving a reason.  Parents wishing to exercise this right are asked to write to the Principal who will then invite the parents into school to discuss their concerns, clarify the nature of the RE and worship provided by the school and set out the options open to the parents as set out in education law.

However, the right of withdrawal does not extend to other areas of the curriculum when, as may happen on occasion, spontaneous questions on religious matters are raised by pupils or there are issues related to religion that arise in other subjects.  Where a pupil is withdrawn from RE and do not take part in alternative religious education, they will be supervised by an appropriate member of staff whilst doing work set by their parents which will seek to further their knowledge and understanding of their parent’s beliefs and values.
