Music

‘Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart.’

Pablo Casalas

Intent

At Knutton, St. Mary’s our intent with our Music curriculum is to give all children practical experiences so that they can develop love and enjoyment in all aspects of Music. We believe Music is an important part of our wider curriculum that gives children opportunities to express themselves in a less academic way than, for example, the basic skills of Reading, Writing and Maths.

Music is at the very heart of our school and we aim to enrich it in many ways. Throughout the year, children of all age groups and abilities are given opportunities to participate in performances, whether it is singing on the playground, entertaining parents and carers or visiting events in the local community to perform.

Implementation

Our curriculum is centred around ‘Charanga’, a music-based scheme, in which the children learn to sing and play instruments. They also have an opportunity to develop an understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music. All teachers deliver the music curriculum in our specialist room, ‘The Studio’. We offer two school choirs, led by the music coordinator, Boyz Noyz and Songbirds. In addition, Y2 and 3 have the opportunity to learn the recorder.

Impact

The impact of our Music curriculum is that when children leave Knutton,St. Mary’s, they will have a love of music and increased levels of self-confidence. They will be inspired by different genres of music, analyse music and compose a variety of music.
